How to protect your computer from a power surge caused by lightening.

The only sure way to protect your computer from a power surge caused by lightening is to unplug your computer. Turning it off just won't work. You need to physically unplug your computer from the outlet in order to protect your computer or electronics.

Tip: When you see that there is an electrical storm approaching you should unplug your computer. Even if the electrical storm is miles away it can still send a powerful enough surge to destroy computer equipment. You may want to also invest in a surge protector. They tend to be very affordable and well worth the cost. In fact, some computer manufacturers will not warranty products that do not use a surge protection devices, so it's recommended you use one. With or without this protection, it's still highly recommended you always unplug your computer during a lightening storm. The use of a surge protector does not guarantee your computer will be safe during a storm.
