Make a Good Web Page META Description
Simple instructions for making a good web page Meta description (Good META tags):
A good Meta Description (or description META TAG) is a
brief description of the contents of a web
page usually written in plain-language in the
form of a sentence. The description may appear
visibly on a search engine
results page, so care should be taken to
ensure it's clearly written and accurately
reflects the true content of a page. The example
code view below shows where this tag generally
located within an HTML document.
Where do I place the META description
in the HTML code ?
<meta name="description" content="Meta Description Goes Here">
This tag is placed after the Header
Tag <head> and
before the </head> tag.
The META description
should be a reflection of what your web page talks
about but in summary form. Care should be taken to form something close
to a complete sentence.
Example of a META Description:
<meta name="description" content="Andrea's
graphic design portfolio of medical illustrations
for doctors dealing with brain function or neurology.">
The META description is rarely a site-wide description unless used on the home page (index) in order to convey a site's overall purpose. Meta
descriptions should never repeat page-to-page. They should be unique and focus directly on a specific page's content for the best results. For example, if a particular
page does not mention, link to, or display any
"medical illustrations" in the text copy, or does not have any on-page image illustrations or other related content,
then the META description should not talk about having medical illustrations located there. Additionally, close attention
to the choice of keywords or phrases is important not only in your META tags but also in your text copy. A META description should never
be a long string of keywords as the META
Keywords tag is meant for this purpose.
TIP: Some time should be invested before your project begins in order to assess the
popularity
keyword phrases to be used in your copy and META tags. This can be accomplished using tools such as AdWords or Word Tracker.
