Sacramento, the capital of California, is an inland city located in the Central Valley approximately 75 miles northeast of San Francisco. The suburbs of the city run all the way east to Folsom and Roseville with some of the most desirable areas to live being parts of Natomas, Fair Oaks, Granite Bay, Midtown, Folsom, Orangevale, Rocklin, Carmichael and Land Park. The American River Parkway has approximately thirty miles of trails and waterways for biking, hiking, rafting and with assorted wildlife. Sacramento is also home to numerous Gold Rush-era mining town attractions, so there is plenty to do and see. Depending on which direction you travel, it's only about a two-hour drive to Lake Tahoe or the beaches of Santa Cruz. Additionally, Sacramento is a hub offering easy access to the nation's finest recreational points of interest, from wine tasting in grape country, to skiing or snowboarding in the Sierras. As far as climate is concerned, residents find it to be milder when compared to cities in the lower valley. This is attributed partly to the mountainous terrain that lies to the east. The overall pace of life is slower than in larger cities like Los Angeles, and people tend to be receptive and friendly. Sacramento ranked #8 in Kiplinger's Best Cities to Live, Work and Play for 2008.
