How to Disable Java in the Google Chrome Browser

The following simple instructions explain how to disable Java in the Google Chrome browser. Two methods are shown: The fastest way and the long way. Java is a plug-in provided in most modern browsers but is typically not needed for most web browsing tasks. It's recommended to disable Java to avoid browser security vulnerabilities according to The Department of Homeland Security Office of Cybersecurity and Communications.

The Fastest Way to Disable Java in Chrome

This is the fastest way I have found to disable Java in Google Chrome.

STEP 1: In the Chrome browsers address bar type chrome://settings and hit ENTER on your keyboard. This will bring up Chrome Settings.

STEP 2: To the very right of the word Settings is a search box. Type java into the search box.

STEP 3: Entering java in the search box will bring you to Privacy and Content settings. Click on the Content settings button.

STEP 4: Once inside Content settings scroll-down until you find Plug-ins. Click on the link Disable individual plug-ins...

STEP 5: Once inside Disable individual plug-ins... scroll-down to Java(TM) and click the Disable link. Once you have clicked the Disable link the Java(TM) plug-in should appear grayed-out indicating the change is now in place. At this stage you can close-out all the Google Chrome settings and begin browsing. You can test to ensure it's disabled by browsing a site like Java Disabled Test.

The Long Way to Disable Java in Google Chrome

STEPS 1 & 2: With the Google Chrome browser open, look for an icon to the right of the address bar that looks like three horizontal lines. Click on the icon. A drop-down list will appear with various options. Choose Settings.

STEPS 3 & 4: Once inside Settings click on the link Show advanced settings...

STEP 5: Once inside Show advanced settings... scroll-down to Privacy and click on the Content settings... button.

STEP 6: Once inside Content settings... scroll-down to Plug-ins. Here you will click on the link that says Disable individual plug-ins...

STEP 7: Once inside Disable individual plug-ins... you will need to scroll-down and look carefully for a plug-in called Java(TM). Directly underneath the Java(TM) is a link labeled Disable. Click the Disable link.

STEP 8: Once you have clicked on the Disable link the Java(TM) plug-in will appear grayed-out like the example below. This indicates that you have successfully disabled Java. You can now close-out all Google Chrome settings. To test the results you can visit this link: Java Disabled Test.

The Java Disabled Test should indicate you have disabled Java similar to the image displayed below. If you place your cursor over the gray box on the Java website it will display a message similar to the example.
